Asphalt Paving Contractor Serving Sonoma, Marin & Lake County
Asphalt paving is the foundation of everything A&L Asphalt does. For over 24 years, we’ve installed new asphalt for driveways, parking lots, and access roads across Sonoma, Marin, and Lake County. Whether you’re paving a home driveway for the first time or replacing a failed commercial lot, the process starts the same way: the right base, the right materials, and a crew that doesn’t cut corners.
What Asphalt Paving Actually Involves
Excavation and grading
We remove old asphalt or unsuitable soil and grade the site so water drains away from the surface instead of pooling on it.
Base rock installation
A layer of compacted base rock goes down first. This is what actually holds the weight of vehicles — asphalt on a weak base will crack and fail no matter how well it's laid.
Compaction
The base rock gets compacted with heavy equipment to create a solid, stable foundation. Skipping or rushing this step is the single most common reason asphalt fails early.
Hot mix asphalt application
We lay hot mix asphalt at the right thickness for the job — a home driveway needs less depth than a commercial lot built for delivery trucks.
Rolling and compaction
The fresh asphalt gets rolled and compacted while it's still hot, which locks the material together and creates a smooth, durable surface.
Curing
New asphalt needs time to cure before it's ready for regular use. We'll tell you exactly how long to wait before parking or driving on it.
Residential vs. Commercial Asphalt Paving
The core process is the same, but the specs change based on what the asphalt needs to hold up to.
Residential driveways typically need a base and asphalt depth suited to passenger vehicles. Commercial lots — especially those seeing delivery trucks, forklifts, or heavy equipment — need a thicker base and asphalt layer to avoid rutting and early failure. We assess your specific use case during your free estimate, not a generic “one size fits all” quote.
Signs You Need New Asphalt Paving (Not Just Repair)
Cracking has spread across most of the surface, not just isolated spots. The base underneath has clearly failed — you’ll notice sinking, rutting, or areas that stay soft and uneven. Multiple past patches haven’t held. Or you’re starting from scratch on a property with no existing asphalt at all.
If your asphalt just has a few isolated cracks or potholes, our asphalt repair service is usually the more cost-effective option — we’ll always tell you honestly which situation you’re in.
What Affects the Cost of Asphalt Paving
Several factors drive the price of any paving project: the size of the area, current ground condition, how much excavation and grading is needed, and the asphalt thickness required for your specific use. A small home driveway on solid ground costs far less than a commercial lot that needs full excavation and a heavy-duty base. We always walk the property in person before quoting, so your estimate reflects the real job.
Asphalt Paving in Northern California's Climate
Sonoma, Marin, and Lake County see a specific combination of conditions that actually matters for how asphalt performs:
long dry summers with intense UV exposure, occasional heavy winter rain, and coastal fog in some areas that keeps moisture around longer than it would inland. That combination is part of why base preparation and drainage planning matter as much as the asphalt itself — a paving job that ignores local drainage patterns tends to show problems within the first rainy season, regardless of how good the asphalt looks on installation day. We factor local site conditions into every paving plan rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
How to Prepare for a Paving Project
Clear the area
Depending on the project, your driveway or a portion of your lot will be unusable during construction and curing. We'll give you a specific timeline so you can plan around it.
Plan for access disruption
Move vehicles, trash cans, and any items stored on the surface being paved.
Consider timing for irrigation and landscaping
If sprinklers or drainage lines run near the paving area, let us know during the estimate so we can plan excavation around them.
Ask about HOA or permit requirements
Some HOA-managed properties require board approval before paving work begins, and larger commercial projects may need permits. We can advise on what's typically required, but confirming with your HOA or local building department ahead of time avoids delays.
